Aims and Objectives

This lecture aims at opening the pupil’s reflexion about transcultural approach of psychopathology and at introducing to anthropological psychiatry.

Definition of anthropological psychiatry

The origins of anthropological psychiatry:

  • Psychoanalysis, Ethnopsychoanalysis, Ethnopsychiatry
  • Phenomenology
  • Structuralism
  • Systemics
  • Sociology of social representations

Basic concepts:

  • Illness: the building of a representation
  • Nosography: cultural classifying of diseases representations
  • Nosology: systemic organizing principle of diseases representations
  • The origin of diseases
  • Symbolic axiology: utilization of a traditional nosography
  • Symbol and “diabol” : an view on the raising of psychosis
  • The notion of symbolic and “diabolic” shifters:

Psychopathology of migrant people.
