Knowledge of legal bases for public libraries

- Knowledge of the structure of local library networks

- Knowledge of book flows in public libraries

- Ability to draft bibliographic description of monographic publications in one or several volumes following ISBD rules and AFNOR standards

- Ability to index according to UDC classification, including auxiliary tables

- Ability to use Windows, Word, Excel

Ability to recognize and take account of user needs

Aims and Objectives

Place trainee in contact with the real life and activities of a public library

- Give trainee the opportunity to implement knowledge acquired in different courses and thus have a better understanding of each subject matter as part of a public service process

- Test trainee's ability to integrate a professional environment

- Test trainee's motivations and professional capacities

- Favor professional contacts with library users

Description

Identification and physical description of setting, status and nature of the institution. Determination of environment and of formal structure if necessary. Identification of governing agency. Evaluating human resources. Direct observation of professional techniques. Collection analysis. Special activities. Knowledge of users. Administration and financial management. Annual budget. Description and self-assessment of tasks. Drafting final descriptive report

Full time work in a certified public library during three consecutive weeks.

50% evaluation of work achieved during training period, based on local assessment and supervisor's observations.

50% based on student's written report.
