Aims and Objectives

At the end of the first year students must be able to :

Recognize the various components of a catalogue entry

Write a correct bibliographic description of monographic publications in single or in several volumes et determine its cross references for an alphabetical author catalogue

Draw up correct cross references headings for individual and corporate authors

Description

Definitions and goals of cataloguing ; origins of international cataloguing rules ; different standards available ; components of a catalogue entry

- Study of French Standard AFNOR 44-050 devoted to the bibliographic description of monographic publications

- Workshops using actual books or photocopy facsimiles

- Various types of author headings ; master files and cross-references : their use and characteristics

- Structure of headings for individual authors and corporate authors, practicals and drills

- Practical writing of complete catalogue entries (call number, accession number, bibliographic description, cross-references)
